False Pretenses

Yellow umbrella

After work on a rainy day
Under the awning of a building
I met you.

Today, you wanted to say something.
But didn’t know what to say.
So, you hesitated.

As I struggled to raise my umbrella,
It began to rain harder.
Gallantly you said, “Let me help.”

I thanked you; you introduced yourself.
“I didn’t know it would rain today.”
You half apologized.

So, I took you under my umbrella.
We ended up having dinner.
We laughed and enjoyed ourselves.

You reached inside your briefcase
to find a pen and paper.
Curiously, I glanced inside…

Much to my surprise,
An object
caught my eye.

Amid the papers of
a hardworking man
lay a tote-sized umbrella.
