This is my empty jar of My Honey Child’s Honey Hair Mask Deep Conditioner. You should have seen me literally trying to not waste one drop, scooping out even what was left in the lid and scraping the sides and bottom of the jar.

In the beginning

I mark the official start of my natural hair care life when I went to Sophia Sunflower Salon to assess my hair and cut all of the remaining chemicals out of my hair. This is known as the “big chop.”

Not only did I learn about how to care for my hair, but also the CEO/owner made high-quality chemical-free products specifically for natural hair. So, I also immediately gained useful products custom to my hair. It was a win-win for someone new to taking care of hair in its un-chemically processed state.

I’ve used a variety of the products over the last 10 years and saw great hair health and as a side effect -- tremendous hair growth and thickness. As I grew more confident with taking care of my hair myself I tried other product lines made by African American women. But I always kept my favorites from My Honey Child on hand.

Moving forward

Running a salon, creating and mixing products, selling, promoting business, writing a book, teaching classes and raising kids, etc. is no small feat even for a phenomenal black woman! And after juggling all that for years My Honey Child dialed it back. You can still buy the most famous product the Type 4 Hair Creme at the salon’s website.

I’ll miss having the option to have reliable, go-to deep and leave-in conditioners, but I applaud my sista for doing what’s best for a better balanced life.

So long, you treated my hair well.
