Well, I’m a cornball. An old sentimental softie. So of course it’s a sappy love song. I have a long list of sappy love songs by boy bands that I secretly wish were written for me. But this more adult one leaps over those mostly because of the line, “Someone exactly like you.” Someone looking for a long time for someone exactly like me — the good the bad and the ugly — the whole package. It’s such a nice sentiment.
The first time I remember hearing the song Someone Like You, it was sung by Dina Carroll in the film Bridget Jones’ Diary. (Told ya I was sap.) Or maybe it was the movie Someone Like You — one of my favorite Ashley Judd movies. This is the original by Van Morrison.
Lyrics
I’ve been searching a long time
For someone exactly like you
I’ve been travelling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.
I’ve been travellin’ a hard road
Lookin’ for someone exactly like you
I’ve been carryin’ my heavy load
Waiting for the light to come
Shining through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.
I’ve been doin’ some soul searching
To find out where you’re at
I’ve been up and down the highway
In all kinds of foreign lands
Someone like you… etc.
I’ve been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different
Drum.
But just lately I have
Realised
The best is yet to come.
Someone like you… etc.
